In the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church, children have their First Confession and receive their First Holy Communion in their 2nd grade year because they've obtained the age of reason (where they can determine and choose between right and wrong). In confession, the child will apologize to God and repair their relationship with Him and humanity. In Communion, they receive the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ, which unites them more closely to God and the rest of the faithful! Though children receive these sacraments for the first time in 2nd grade, our program encourages children to seek these sacraments regularly as a part of their lifelong faith!
Our preparation for First Confession and First Holy Communion is built into our weekly Sunday classes for religious education. Classes are required for all individuals needing the sacraments, including students who attend Catholic school. In addition to weekly class, the children have two retreats for prayer and preparation throughout the year! If you have a child who needs these sacraments, registration opens each summer! Contact our Director of Religious Education with any questions!
