A catechist is a primary teacher of the catechism (teachings of the Catholic faith). Their responsibility is a big calling. Forming the next generation of Catholics in conjuction with their parents is a significant undertaking, but it is beyond rewarding. Catechists walk with children ages 3-18, teaching them, praying for them, and sharing in their joys and struggles. A catechist lives Christ's command to make disciples of all nations in a specific and necessary way, and their work is a fantastic contribution to Christ's mission.
Catechists first and foremost need to be safe. Children and teens will be spending a lot of time with catechists, so safety is paramount. For this reason, all catechists are required to take a safety training course and pass a background check. For more details, click the Safe Environment tab to the left. Catechists also need to be organized and capable of leading (with a coteacher) a classroom of students for their assigned age group. Training and orientation is provided for all catechists prior to the start of each religious education year (beginning September). You do not need to be a professional teacher to become a catechist. If you have questions about the role, or if you are interested in becoming a catechist, please contact our Director of Religious Education!
